Evinrude Outboards History

Like many of the United States' best companies, Evinrude Outboards started with a problem. During a hot summer trip on a rowboat in 1906, founder Olé Evinrude was inspired to create a better solution — a detachable motor. The first model hit the market in 1909. By 1912, it was so popular that the company had to relocate to a bigger facility to meet the demand.

Over the years, Evinrude adjusted and improved its original design, adding a flywheel magneto ignition and 360-degree steering. This tradition of innovation continued into the 1930s, when Olé's son Ralph took over the company. It extends all the way to the present day.

About Evinrude Outboards

Since 1906, Evinrude has continually introduced new products and technologies. The company went public in 2013 and is now headquartered in Racine, Wisconsin. It's part of the BRP Marine Propulsion Systems Division. Engineering teams in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and Stuart, Florida, move the technology forward. All Evinrude products are built in Sturtevant from components sourced from U.S. companies and the company's in-house cylinder block facility in Spruce Pine, North Carolina.
